What is an escape room?
An escape room is a themed live-entertainment game that allows you and up to 9 of your friends to be "locked" in a room that tests your minds on puzzles, riddles and clues provided that must be solved in order to escape the room within an hour. All of our rooms are 60 minute games!
Is the room ACTUALLY locked?!
The main door is NOT actually locked, because we want our customers with conditions such as claustrophobia, PTSD, etc. to feel safe and comfortable in our business's environment while stepping out of their comfort zones mentally. This allows all walks of life to be able to participate!
How are you different than other escape rooms?
Our favorite part about our escape room is that we are very unique! Not a single clue in any of our rooms is purchased from corporate game makers. All of our games are designed and created right here by us, the owner & the manager. To start the appointment, we ensure the game you selected is easy enough for your team before going over all the rules & suggestions. We also explain the difference between linear games & nonlinear games as our more difficult room offers multi-step clues and multiple tracks of clues. Before entering the room, we ensure all questions are answered to the best of our abilities without giving away specific details to the themes. PLUS Behind Locked Doors offers a lock bar before the escape game experience. This bar contains ALL the possible locks you may happen across at our facility. This allows your group to test your lock skills and ensure you know where to align your codes & combinations. Once your team is in the game and requires help, we give clues in person instead of over a screen so there is no technological miscommunication. Instead of just giving an answer when a group asks for a clue, we guide them to the right answer using the information they already know! Furthermore, both of us are very hands on, so we are running & monitoring the games to a very high degree since we have a personal connection to the game. After the game has timed out, we answer whatever questions you may have and guests are welcome to give honest feedback that we use to improve our games. How many people are able to participate?
The minimum number of people is 3. However, with only 3 minds, it can be a rather difficult task to escape the room, so we recommend at least 4 or 5. We currently allow up to 10 people per themed room. Teams are not required to fill the room to capacity and will have the room exclusively for their team regardless of the number of participants. That means no worries of playing with strangers!
What is the "Couple's Exception"?
Although our minimum number of players is 3, appointments can be made available for couples. However, to offset the cost to run the game, we have to charge a flat fee for couples that is higher than our normal $25 per person rate. This flat rate is $70 for a couple. To book this, please selection two players and one "Couple's Exception" when reserving your booking.

What if I have MORE than 10 players?
Since our rooms are capped at 10 people per theme, we offer a couple different solutions for groups over 10. If there is only one or two additional players, we can squeeze you into the same theme. However, please note that by booking it this way, your team is consenting to being like "sardines in a can" and won't have much excess room to move around freely. For those groups over 10 members that don't wish to be in the same theme, we can run "competitive" games at the same time as long as our appointment schedule allows us to do so. Simply book the themes you are looking to schedule and then send us a message on Facebook or give us a phone call so we can define your games' start times and we can ensure no other groups can schedule during your games!
When should I make my appointment?
We are open by appointment only, so a reservation must be placed! We have a variety of appointments available for booking within the following hours: Monday-Wednesday 9:30a-7:30p, Thursday 9:30a-4p, Friday 9:30a-10p, Saturday 11:30a-10p, Sunday 12:45p-7:30p. We do require 3 hours in advance notice and our booking website will automatically reflect that time restriction. Occasionally, we will offer walk in appointments, which we will post about on our Facebook page. We also may have appointments available prior to our 3 hour time constraint should we already be in the office for previously booked appointments, so just give us a call! Are you handicap accessible and handicap friendly?
YES! Our business is handicap accessible and handicap friendly. Our rooms are designed so that items can be moved if needed and wheelchairs are able to move about easily. For those who fear they cannot stand for the full hour, we will happily provide a chair for your convenience!
How much does it cost?
In our escape room facility, we do our best to keep the cost affordable, but also keep the rooms interactive and fun! Currently, our rooms are $25 per person over and including the age of 10. Yes, that means children 10 and over are considered "adults" here! Children under the age of 10 are $15 per person, while under the age of 5 are free. This experience is TAX FREE! Furthermore, you don't have to pay until you get to your event, so no pesky fees online!* For payment, we prefer cash; however we also accept debit cards and most major credit cards!
Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes, we offer gift certificates for those interested in giving this experience as a present! Unfortunately we do not have electronic certificates. Please go to the Book Now! page and select "Gift Certificates" to schedule an appointment for payment & pickup or message the Facebook page to set up a time to purchase and pick up your gift certificate.
Where can I park?
You may park outside of our location along the side of our building on Market Street or diagonally on Clay Street! You are also welcome to park after hours in the First National Bank of Taylorville parking lot.
Is there an age limit on the escape rooms?
Although it is suggested that no players under the age of 5 participate because of the complexity of puzzles, we don't have a restricting age limit! Young, old, doesn't matter. At Behind Locked Doors, age is just a number and not a requirement! Appointments do have to be reserved by individuals over the age of 16.
Do kids need adult supervision to play?
As long as waivers are completed for any players under the age of 18 by an adult taking responsibility for their possible actions inside of the games, children aged 17-11 are not required to be accompanied by an adult. Children aged 10 and under must be accompanied by a paying adult over the age of 18. Furthermore, for our Kidz Only! room, at least one viewer is required to accompany the kids.
What is Kidz Only! and how is it different than your other games?
Kidz Only! is a game built specifically for children and their freeness & creativity in mind! Kidz Only is our most interactive room yet and reflects a price difference compared to our normal games. The price for participants is $25 per person and the price for viewers is $5 per person. This room does not allow participants over the age of 15. Kidz Only is the only game with a viewing window, which allows others to watch the game as it progresses and even includes a riddle exclusively for those on the outside! A one viewer minimum is required to book Kidz Only!
Where can I get a waiver?
Waivers are now 100% electronic! After your reservation has been made through Bookeo, eWaiverPro will send you an e-mail to forward to the members in your group. These MUST be signed before your reservation! Players under the age of 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian in order to participate. All players must have a signed waiver. When should I arrive prior to my game?
In order to make sure all the details of your game are in order, we require you to arrive 15 minutes before your time slot! If you are unable to make it 15 minutes early, please call ahead and let us know so we can keep your team on track.
What if my group can't make it to our scheduled appointment?
Should your plans change or complications arise and your team is unable to make it to your scheduled appointment, please either cancel or reschedule the appointment through your e-mail confirmation or call as soon as you know you can't make it! Through your confirmation e-mail you can cancel up to 4 hours before the appointment and you can make adjustments up to 2 hours before the appointment. If it is past these timeframes, please call (217)777-8060 as soon as you are aware that you cannot make it. Once it has hit your start time, we will give you a curtesy call. If we receive no answer within 15 minutes of the start time of your appointment, your group will be marked as a no call no show. No call no show groups will be required to pay a deposit in order to hold their reservations in the future.
What happened to the Quincy location?
Unfortunately, we had to close the Quincy location. However, we still offer mobile escape boxes up to 3 hours outside of Taylorville!
What happened to the Rage Cage (aka a rage room)?
Unfortunately, we had to close the Rage Cage due to high costs and low demand. There are nearby rage rooms in Bloomington & Peoria!
